About Us

The Las Moras Springs Conservation Association is a grassroots organization consisting of residents from Brackettville, Fort Clark Springs, Spofford, and Kinney County who began organizing after our shared Las Moras Springs and Creek ran dry in 2022. The abnormal and sudden change to our environment has impacted us all in different ways, from ranchers needing to drill deeper wells as neighboring permit holders over-pup the aquifer they share, to residents of Brackettville and Fort Clark Springs losing crucial places of recreation used for fishing, swimming and spending time in nature with family and friends. Lipan Apache ceremonies rely upon water flowing through Las Moras Springs and Creek to conduct, so our local tribal peoples have once again been robbed of their access to the land they so profoundly strive to honor and protect.

What was once a thriving oasis in Kinney County, Texas is now a grim symbol of the greed and entitlement that plagues a handful of people in our community – namely large scale pumpers who own water rights through the local Groundwater Conservation District. The members of Las Moras Springs Conservation Association acknowledge that some of the biggest pumpers are reliant on groundwater pumping for their businesses, but we also recognize this does not give them the right to jeopardize our community’s accss to water, drain the spring, risk the permanent loss of creeks, vegetation, and wildlife, or damage property values for the homeowners in Brackettville and Fort Clark Springs. Protecting our community and natural environment is the central goal of our organization, and we aim to ensure that future generations have an opportunity to enjoy the natural abundance of Kinney County and Las Moras Springs as we have been blessed to do.

The Kinney County Groundwater Conservation District is the only governing body with the power to implement policy that will conserve our groundwater, yet they have taken no action to do so. This is despite two years of advocacy on behalf of the LMSCA; attending meetings, researching and proposing potential solutions, developing a science-based drought plan withe the approval of a renowned groundwater attorney, and more. We will continue to do our part to develop solutions and hold our elected leadership accountable, but we cannot succeed alone. We need you.
