Protect Kinney County’s Water: Elect Candidates
Who Endorse the SOS Plan!

Why this petition matters

To the Resident of Kinney County,

Our beloved Las Moras Springs and the aquifers that sustain our community are under severe threat. For three consecutive summers, Las Moras Springs has run dry, devastating our local wildlife, historical sites, and the very essence of what makes our community unique. The excessive groundwater pumping, which has more than doubled in recent years, is a direct cause of this crisis. The Kinney County Groundwater Conservation District, (“KCGCD”) has the authority to mandate that pumpers curtail their pumping, but have stated explicitly that they refuse to do so.  In the upcoming November election for the KCGCD board, we have a crucial opportunity to elect candidates who will prioritize the protection of our water resources. We need leaders who will endorse and implement the SOS (Save Our Springs) Plan—a comprehensive Critical Period Management Plan designed to ensure sustainable groundwater management and protect Las Moras Springs.

**The SOS Plan includes:**

  • Implementing critical period triggers to restrict groundwater pumping during periods of low spring flow.
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability in groundwater management.
  • Balancing property rights with the urgent need for conservation to prevent the permanent loss of our springs.

Why This Matters

Protect our water – The current board has failed to implement necessary measures to curtail excessive pumping, putting our springs and aquifers at risk.

Safeguard our Community – The health of our springs directly impacts our property values, local wildlife, and the quality of life in Kinney County.

Ensure Sustainable Future – Without immediate action, we risk losing Las Moras Springs forever, with devastating consequences for future generations.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, CALL FOR

Electing Candidates Who Support the SOS Plan: We need board members who will endorse and implement the SOS Plan, ensuring sustainable water management practices.

Immediate Action to Curtail Pumping: Support for mandatory pumping curtailments to protect our springs during critical periods.

Transparency and Accountability: Mandate that permit pumpers accurately monitor and report groundwater pumping.
